Operations Director Job Description

Girls Rock Detroit (GRD) seeks a dynamic and task-oriented person to join the organization in 2019 as the new Operations Director. GRD is a music and mentoring organization that empowers Detroit-area girls, women, trans and gender non-conforming people through summer music camp, music education and activities that foster leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Using a multi-generational, peer mentoring model, GRD provides music, arts, and media education in the form of instrument lessons, band creation, original songwriting, and workshops on topics such as media literacy, writing, self-defense, and confidence building.

This spring, GRD is excited to bring on the Operations Director as we build our co-director leadership environment, in partnership with our planned Program Director. The two directors will collaborate in building a successful shared leadership work environment as co-directors of Girls Rock Detroit, with support from the Board of Directors.

Bringing an excitement for the mission of Girls Rock Detroit, the Operations Director will be primarily responsible for internal management of the organization. In this role, the Director will build new and strengthen existing infrastructure and internal communication. We are looking for someone who loves being organized as much as they love music.

This is a part-time year-round position, with the possibility for full-time work during the summer. The Operations Director’s daily schedule varies based on deadlines, programming, and priorities. Some night and weekend hours are required.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Excited by collaboration, but also confident working independently

  • Able to communicate and work in diverse, fast-paced, and occasionally loud and distracting environments

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting deadlines while juggling multiple projects

  • Excellent project management skills, helping to both create and maintain projects, assign tasks when needed, update progress, and keep team members on track

  • Ability to ask for help

  • Experience with Google Suite (Sheets and Docs) or Microsoft Office

  • Reliable phone and internet access, including access to email

  • Reliable access to transportation

  • Able to lift musical equipment (up to 50 lbs)

  • Michigan state criminal background clearances are required for this position


 Additional Desired Skills

  • Experience with Project Management software

  • Website management

  • Experience with digital security and digital asset management

  • Payroll, budgeting, and bookkeeping experience

  • Experience with musical gear

  • Girls Rock Camp experience, musical experience, and/or experience working with youth

The salary for this part-time position is $15600 - $19500, depending on summer hours.
